Recycling is good for the earth and good for McCarthy-Towne

There are several on-going recycling efforts that benefit McT. We collect toner cartidges, cell phones and other electronics which we send to a recycling company for profit. You may also have noticed the colorful Atibi paper recycling bins in the Parker Damon parking lot. And don’t forget to save your unwanted household items for the annual McCarthy-Towne yard sale! More about the recycling programs below.

Recycling fundraiser continues, with new items eligible!

McCarthy-Towne sends used printer cartridges and used electronics to a recycling program and earns money for them in return. You can find collection boxes in the McCarthy-Towne office, at the main branch of the Acton Memorial Library and at the Acton Water District office on Rte. 111. Additionally, you may box them up yourself and use a shipping label printed from the Funding Factory or ecophone website and call UPS or DHL, respectively, for free shipping.

Last year the PTSO received about $800 from its cartridge and phone recycling program. And now, we are adding new items to recycle! In addition to cell phones, inkjet and laser cartridges, we are collecting used DVD movies and DVD video games, portable DVD players, laptop and notebook computers, MP3 players, video game consoles, digital cameras, digital picture frames, and portable GPS devices. It doesn’t matter whether they are working or not; we receive something for every item (although more for working items!). Desktop computers and toner tanks are not accepted for recycling.

We participate in multiple recycling programs: Funding Factory for our laser cartridge recycling, and Ecophones.com for used electronics. Cell phones and inkjet cartridges may be sent to either fundraising source.

Ecophones pays $1 for each working DVD with its original case, cover art and liner notes. Those that are non-working, scratched, or have missing materials will be credited at 10% of the working DVD price. Prices paid for laptop/notebook computers, MP3 players, digital cameras and video game consoles are based on the model and whether they have all the parts needed to be operational. Non-working items or those with missing parts will be credited at 20% of the working item price. Digital picture frames, portable DVD players and GPS devices are also accepted, with a 20% credit for non-working items. For more specifics, click on the link to the Ecophones.com website.

Donations of items are tax-deductible; however, you should consult your tax advisor for a determination of the items’ value.

We are always in need or appreciative of help in a) setting up a collection bin at your office, b) picking up materials from the library and water district office or c) packing up materials collected at the school office for shipping. If you are available on a regular or occasional basis, tell Astrid in the office or contact Debbie.

Recycling Bins Outside of the Parker Damon Building

The Atibi recycling company will pay for each ton of paper recycled, with proceeds going to the PDB Steering Committee to use for projects in shared areas of the building. If the quantities to be recycled warrant a weekly pickup, the price paid per ton can increase. To this end, the recycling bin is open for donations from the community.

Drop off paper recycling into the special dumpster at any time. Newspapers, magazines, office and school papers, shopping catalogs, mail, envelopes, folders, copy paper, colored paper, paperback books, and shredded paper (in a clear plastic bag) are all welcome. Please DO NOT INCLUDE: cardboard (both corrugated and cereal/food boxes), phone books, plastic, glass, metal, trash or anything from the kitchen or bathroom.
